Sigma’s APO 300-800mm F5.6 EX DG HSM is another unique lens in the line of Sigma offerings. An ultra telephoto as no other camera or lens manufacturer offers the serious photographer! Featuring a constant aperture of F5.6 throughout the entire zoom range, this lens is ideal for photographing wildlife when there is no way of controlling the distance of the animal to the camera. With a simple turn of the zoom ring, the photographer can instantly adjust the composition of the image without moving or disturbing the subject.

Similarly, the zoom accommodates sporting photography such as soccer or surfing where the rapidly changing distance of the action requires massive changes in focal length in a matter of seconds. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range. At the rear of the lens, a drop in 46mm filter holder is provided so that the photographer can easily add inexpensive color correction or light balancing filters. A perfect lens for surveillance use, its stealth black finish is unobtrusive and easily concealed.

The Sigma 300-800 f5.6 is a extra-ordinary lens in every respect!
This lens leaves nothing to desire in respect of image quality, and can hold its own with the best 800mm fixed focal lenses from the leading manufactures. All this for around 1/4 of the money less. However, unlike any competitor this lens, here one is spoiled with a zoom. Whoever has used a 800m lens for anything else than to get a barn-door closer, knows how difficult it can be, to find ones subject. Here the zoom is not only very helpful to quickly find the target, it also allows for more play with framing. There is quite a bit of focus shift, but this is to be expected on a lens like this!
So where is the catch?? The only reason this lens did not get full marks from me was the weight. This lens is everything but portable or lightweight. I take this lens with me on hikes, and on safaris, but I am 6″3′ fairly fit and sweating afterwards. If you intend to use this lens, get a solid tripod with a gimbal head or some sort of support where the lens rests securely. Handhold shooting is near impossible! As said, if it would not be for the weight, this lens would pass full marks with flying colours!
Now all we need to do, is to wait for a “OS” upgrade!!
