Canon EOS R5 and Sigma field test by Simon Du Plessis

Text and photo’s by Sigma Ambassador Simon Du Plessis, Actionimage.

I was invited by Canon South Africa to do a field review on their new Canon EOS R5 mirrorless body.

This kept me quite busy, testing the R5 out in the field using various Canon RF and EF lenses, as well as my Sigma lenses, namely the 120-300 f2.8 Sport, 100-400 f5-6.3 Contemporary and my EX 150 f2.8 Macro.

When I collected the R5 from Canon SA, there was concern that the AF of my Sigma lenses wouldn’t work reliably with the new R5 – I was quite surprised and pleased that all worked perfectly!

I also had the opportunity to borrow the Sigma 500mm f4 Sport and test it on the new R5, with no unwanted surprises – it worked flawlessly; rapid accurate AF, superb image quality.

The Egyptian Goose “Flying” image is one in a series 8 shots, all but one perfectly sharp.  The 500 f4 Sport really impressed me in the very short time I could use it.

Take a look at the results below:

There are some reports of reliability issues with the Sigma lenses and the R5 system, but these will likely be resolved in the near future with Sigma’s Firmware updates.

Thank you for reading, happy shooting!
